Chapter Eight

When I opened my eyes, I initially thought that the room was empty. On second glance, however, I spotted the slender form of an older man standing by the window, looking out. He wore a long white coat and his arms were folded behind his back. As I moved, he glanced at me, the light flashing through his glasses.

“Are you the doctor?” I asked. “Do you know when I can get out of here?”

He crossed the room and stood over me, his face gathered up in concern or surprise, I couldn’t tell which. Perhaps it was both. “You can see me?”

His voice was so quiet that I almost missed the words. “Of course I can see you. I’m not blind. You’re standing only a foot away.”

He leaned back, regarding me with a singularly scientific expression, using a forefinger to slide his glasses back up his nose. I thought it must be a habit, for there was no sign that the glasses had been slipping at all.

“Most people can’t see me,” he announced. “After all, I’m dead.”

I laughed at the joke until I realized that he was serious… deathly serious.

“Of course you’re not dead,” I protested. “I can see you standing right there. You’re talking to me.” I glanced at the IV still in my arm. “Unless you’re a morphine-induced hallucination.”

He chuckled. “You’ve been off of the morphine for over six hours. I’m real, even if I am dead—have been dead for quite some time. I know what I am… but what are you, that you can see me?”

“Um,” I frowned. “I guess I might be… a witch.”

He frowned, shaking his head. “No. That’s not it. If that were the case, more of the nurses and doctors would be able to see me. No, there’s something different about you.” He snapped his fingers. “I know! You must be a Medium.”

I blinked at him. “A what?”

“A Medium,” he announced. “Not that I believed in them when I was alive, but being dead teaches you things. I mean, I was an atheist and here I am… dead and yet still functioning to a degree. It’s logical if you think about it—ghosts must exist—since I most certainly exist—so there must naturally be those that can sense or otherwise see them. It’s fairly simple.”

My head was spinning by this point. “Who are you?” I asked. “Since you’re here in my hospital room, I assume you were a doctor?”

“Doctor Ebenezer Baites,” he announced, pulling his glasses off to polish them on his lab coat. “I founded this hospital, while I was alive. I like to step in and keep an eye on things now and then. It was my life’s work, after all.”

“So, you’re not here because you have unfinished business?” I asked. “I’m not supposed to save you or something?”

He paused thoughtfully. “No, nothing I can think of. Perhaps, though, I am here so you can see me. After all, I can explain all this after-death stuff better than most ghosts can. Some I have encountered don’t even know they are dead.
